MACHINES
Our environment is full of machines that we use, or even think we could probably
not live without, but for various reasons we have usually forgotten or never knew
how they work. As the human mind has always tried to find explanations for the
forces that influence its life, I try to elaborate and depict in my pictures, in
an artistic way and with artistic means, the essence of the machines and devices
that surround us. I also want to express my respect for inventors.
I have deliberately depicted my subjects in black and white, emphasising the
similarities with early burlesque films, where the machines had personality and
a sense of humour.
My compositions are also diagnoses of our time. Leonardo da Vinci was able to
create projects for future generations; I am just trying to understand the
machines of my own time. In my experimental works, I want to develop, step by step,
a form that I believe is capable of representing the world around me.
I am a realist in this respect, but my artistic style also departs from
realism in this respect.
