Tamás Waliczky: Marionettes, 2006, excerpt
MARIONETTES
"Marionettes" is a seven-minute computer animation about the collapse. Marionettes
are held and controlled by strings. If there are no strings, they collapse. No one
controls the body. If no one is controlling the body, it is controlled by the
forces of nature; mass, gravity, collision, friction, randomness. In this
animation, the animator does not animate in the traditional sense. He does not
control the animation frame by frame. Therefore, we can say that it is an
anti-animation.
The forces controlling the movement of the puppets are calculated by physics
simulation algorithms. Therefore, these movements are strictly mathematical.
Yet they create a dramatic effect. The collapse is represented both physically
and, surprisingly for machine-animated puppets, psychologically.
